NSF-Sponsored Workshop
Teaching of First Course in Power
Systems
(supported by innovations in teaching of power electronics and electric machines/drives)
Walt Disney World,
Background:
Recent years have seen a renewed student interest in the power area while Power Systems courses have not changed in decades. In the mean time, the power industry is going through major changes that include increasing use of power electronics and drives in the form of HVDC, SVC, renewable and distributed generation such as wind mills and energy conservation, not forgetting utility deregulation and free markets.
Objective:
Discuss the syllabus of a course that adequately prepares students for industry as well as for advanced graduate-level courses, assuming it is the only Power Systems course most undergraduates would take.
Workshop Agenda:
Friday (Feb 11, 2005)
Saturday (Feb 12, 2005)
o Role of ISOs – Mr. Steve Whitley, COO - ISO New England
o Increasing role of HVDC, SVCs and TCSCs – Mr. Mike Bahrman, ABB
