Graduate Application Checklist

Thank you for your interest in graduate study in the Electrical Engineering Graduate Program at the University of Minnesota. Browse our Web site for information about our EE degree program, people and research activities. If you need more information and assistance, please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Linda Jagerson, jager001@umn.edu, 612 625 3564

Application Information

When you apply to the Electrical Engineering Graduate Program at the University of Minnesota you must complete two applications. The first is the application to the Graduate School of the University of Minnesota which must be accompanied by an application fee payment. The second application is to the Electrical Engineering Graduate Program. The information below will help guide you in submitting these applications.

The Electrical Engineering Graduate Program offers M.S. (plan A or C) and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering . Students planning to work toward the Ph.D. should apply directly to the Ph.D. program. If you are not planning to pursue the Ph.D. degree then apply to the M.S. program and earn a Master's degree, you can then apply for the Ph.D. if you wish. For more information about the degree programs, please refer to the EE Graduate Student Handbook.

The deadline for Fall semester admission is December 15 of the previous year. Only applications received by December 15 will be considered for financial support. Applications received after December 15 will be reviewed for space available admission. The Electrical Engineering Graduate Program only admits a few students to the Spring or Summer semesters when there are special circumstances. Students are not encouraged to apply for Spring or Summer admission.

The Graduate School Application for Admission goes directly to the Graduate School. You must use the Graduate School on line application. The application, plus all required documentation, is our method of evaluation. The University of Minnesota and the faculty members of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department will not evaluate your record without an application. Please do not send copies of theses, term papers, essays, or publications unless specifically requested.

We base admissions primarily on your undergraduate academic record, your GRE scores, [TOEFL scores (for International students)], statement of purpose and letters of recommendation. We generally do not consider applicants with an overall undergraduate grade point average lower than 3.0/4.0 or equivalent. Occasionally, we will accept transfer students from other institutions or other University programs and apply the same admission criteria as for those who first apply to our program.

Application Procedures

The Electrical Engineering Graduate Program does not mail application materials to applicants.

The Graduate School and the Department of Electrical Engineering no longer accept printed applications which have been mailed. Use the Graduate School on-line application for admission.

The Graduate School will email you when your application is complete and has been forwarded to the department for review.

The Electrical Engineering Graduate Program Application must be completed on line at our Graduate Application Web Page. The web pages associated with this application allow you to enter information about yourself which will be placed directly in an on line data base in our offices. You will receive a student ID number and you will enter a password to go with the ID number. You will receive an email with the ID Number from our system. Be sure to keep the ID number as you will need it to go back in to the application if you need to add or edit information. In addition, you will need to give the ID Number to those making recommendations for you. Keep the ID Number in a safe place and give it only to those making recommendations.

Letters of Recommendation

For the doctoral program, the EE Graduate Program requires three letters of recommendation from professors who are well acquainted with your academic and research abilities and achievements. The recommendations must be done using the online system. You should give those writing letters of recommendation your identification number for the Department Application and the web address for on-line letters of recommendation. If you have an M.S. degree, one of the three letters should come from your master's program advisor. Letters are not required for the master's of science programs, but they are strongly recommended and are required to be considered for assistantships and fellowships.

Please do not send letters of recommendation to the Graduate School.

Statement of Purpose

The statement of purpose is an important part of your application. It should be approximately one page in length. There is no specific format, but in general the statement should address your reasons for wanting to pursue an MS or PhD in EE, what your particular interests are (or, if your interests are broad, state that), and your longer-range career plans, as appropriate.

Test Scores

The GRE general test is required for admission consideration. We generally like to see scores that are at least 80th percentile for the quantitative and analytical tests, and at least 70th percentile for the verbal test.

We do not accept the computer-based test for the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Korea. Applicants from these countries should plan on taking the new GRE test offered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) which offers the test in two parts: a computer-based analytical writing test, to be followed by verbal and quantitative paper-based tests.

If your undergraduate institution is outside the United States, you may be required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and submit the results along with your application for admission.

International Students are required to take the TOEFL examination in addition to the GRE. The minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 550 (213 if computer based). If you have questions regarding the TOEFL, contact the Graduate School (612-625-9364). Non-native English speaking applicants who wish to be considered for Teaching Assistantships are strongly encouraged to take the Test of Spoken English (TSE) in his/her home country and to submit the results to the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Electrical Engineering.

Financial Support

Three types of financial support are available for graduate students: fellowships, research assistantships (RAs) and teaching assistantships (TAs). In general these forms of support provide a regular stipend, waiver of all or part of tuition and fees, and a health insurance and benefit package. All students who apply by the December 15 deadline will automatically be considered, on a competitive basis. For further information see Fellowship and Scholarship Opportunities. International students should also contact the office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) for counseling, advising, financial aid, career and immigration status services.
