THE DEGREE PROGRAM FORM

A. FILE A DEGREE PROGRAM FORM AFTER COMPLETION OF 10 SEMESTER CREDITS

Students are expected to file an official program for the degree after completion of 10 semester credits.

B. WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE DEGREE PROGRAM FORM

  1. ALL COURSEWORK, COMPLETED AND PROPOSED, THAT WILL BE OFFERED IN FULFILLMENT OF DEGREE REQUIREMENTS IN THE MAJOR FIELD AND IN THE MINOR FIELD OR SUPPORTING PROGRAM, INCLUDING ANY TRANSFER WORK

Students list all coursework, completed and proposed, that will be offered in fulfillment of degree requirements, including transfer work. The degree program form is available from the Assistant to the Director of Graduate Studies in 4-174C. The form should list all coursework, completed and proposed, that will be offered in fulfillment of degree requirements in the major field and in the minor field or supporting program, including any transfer work.

  2. DESIGNATING A MINOR

Students who wish to complete a designated minor (which is certified on the transcript - unlike the related fields option, which is not) must complete 6 or more credits in a single field (other Institute of Technology departments including Math and Statistics). A designated minor must be approved by the Director of Graduate Studies in the minor field. A designated minor in Electrical Engineering or Computer and Information Sciences should focus on a particular subject outside of Computer Engineering, such as digital signal processing, microelectronics, artificial intelligence, or numerical analysis, for instance, and must be approved by the Directors of Graduate Study in both Computer Engineering and the designated minor program.

  3. THESIS (PLAN A) OR DESIGN PROJECT (PLAN B) TITLE

The Thesis/Design Project Title is submitted for approval as part of the information provided on the student's official degree program form.

  4. THE FINAL EXAMINATION COMMITTEE

Minimum of 3 examiners; 2 from the major, one from the minor/related field. See the Graduate School website, Graduate Faculty Roster to verify Graduate Faculty Status of committee members http://www.grad.umn.edu.

    1. The student is responsible for asking each of the proposed committee members if they will serve on the committee before submitting the Degree Program form to the Computer Engineering program for approval.

    2. If you are proposing a committee member who you have not taken a course from, as it appears on your Degree Program form, you should include a letter stating your reason for selecting this particular person in preference to anyone who has taught you in class.

  5. COMPUTER ENGINEERING PROGRAM CHECKLIST (SEE THE FORMS SECTION AT THE END OF THIS HANDBOOK)

  6. COMPUTER ENGINEERING SUGGESTED COMMITTEE MEMBERS FORM (SEE THE FORMS SECTION AT THE END OF THIS HANDBOOK)

Proposed Committee for the Final Oral Examination. The Computer Engineering Suggested Committee Members form listing who will serve on the Final Oral Examination is submitted with the Degree Program form. The committee must contain at least two members of the graduate faculty in Computer Engineering and one faculty member representing the minor or related field.

All committee members must be present at the examination; the absence of any member results in an invalid examination.

Committee suggestions are indicated on the Computer Engineering Suggested Committee Members Form only NOT on the Graduate School Degree Program Form.

The Degree Program Form should be submitted to the Assistant to the Director of Graduate Studies for program approval. After the program approves it, the form is forwarded to the Graduate School for their approval. The Graduate School will send you a signed copy of your degree program after it has been approved.

  7. IF YOUR GRADES PLACE YOU NEAR THE MINIMUM PERFORMANCE REQUIRE-MENTS, THE PROGRAM WILL HOLD UP APPROVAL OF YOUR DEGREE PROGRAM FORM.

  8. A DEGREE PROGRAM APPROVED BY THE GRADUATE SCHOOL MUST BE ON FILE BEFORE REVIEWS REPORT (PLAN A), EXAMINATION, OR GRADUATION FORMS WILL BE RELEASED TO THE STUDENT

  9. TRANSFER CREDITS

The following rules apply to transfer of credits. Master's degree students are required by the Graduate School to complete at least 60 percent of the coursework for their official degree programs (excluding thesis credits) as registered University of Minnesota Graduate School students. With approval of the adviser, Director of Graduate Studies in the major (and Director of Graduate Studies in the minor, if the courses are for a designated minor), and Graduate School, the transfer of up to 40 percent of the degree program coursework from any combination of the following is permitted.

    1. Other Recognized Graduate Schools;

    2. Adult special, summer session, and University College (formerly Continuing Education and Extension) registrations at the University of Minnesota.

In all cases, official transcripts of the work must be attached to the degree program form. (If they have already been included in the student's Graduate School file, then a copy of the transcript will be accepted.) Work to be transferred must be graduate level (post-baccalaureate), have been taken for graduate credit, and have been taught by faculty authorized to teach graduate courses. Credits transferred from other institutions must also have been taken as an enrolled, graduate-degree-seeking student and appear on official graduate school transcripts of the institutions. University of Minnesota courses taken in Continuing Education and Extension must bear the special CEE transcript entry verifying that they were completed for graduate credit.

In the case of a transfer from a non-U.S. institution, the credits must have been earned in a program judged by the Graduate School to be comparable to a graduate degree program in a graduate school of a regionally accredited institution in the United States.

  10. WHAT CANNOT BE TRANSFERRED

    1. Transfer credits not accepted as part of a student's degree program cannot be transferred to the Graduate School transcript.

    2. Courses completed through independent (correspondence) study, completed through extension or special categories at other institutions, or taken before the awarding of a baccalaureate degree cannot be transferred.

C. PROGRAM CHANGES AND EXAMINATION COMMITTEE ADDITIONS/DELETIONS

  1. PETITION ANY CHANGES TO THE DEGREE PROGRAM FORM

Once approved, the program must be fulfilled in every detail to meet graduation requirements. Program changes should be requested by completing a Graduate School Petition form which is available from the Assistant to the Director of Graduate Studies, 4-174C EE/Csci Building.

  2. EXAMINATION COMMITTEE ADDITIONS/DELETIONS MUST BE APPROVED BY THE ADVISOR AND DGS

Any change in the examination committee must first be approved by the advisor and then by the Director of Graduate Studies.

D. WHAT DOES NOT COUNT TOWARD DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

  1. COLLOQUIUMS FROM ANY DEPARTMENT DO NOT COUNT TOWARD DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

  2. PRACTICAL TRAINING DOES NOT COUNT TOWARD DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

  3. 4000-LEVEL COURSES DO NOT COUNT TOWARD DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
