MS COMP E (PLAN B) DESIGN PROJECT OPTION
A. THE DEGREE PROGRAM FORM—MS COMPUTER ENGINEERING (PLAN B) DESIGN PROJECT OPTION
- Students are expected to file an official program for the degree after completion of 10 semester credits.
- There are a total of 30 semester credits in the program.
- Major Field Requirement: A minimum of 15 major field course credits are required for the degree. At least
3 of these must be at the 8000-level. The Plan B Project does not count as part of these credits.
- A program must include at least 6 major field course credits in Electrical Engineering (courses must
be registered using EE course designator).
- A program must include at least 6 major field course credits in Computer Science (courses must
be registered using CS course designator).
- A program must include 3 Plan B Project credits.
- The remaining credits in the program can be taken in any department within the Institute of Technology or
the Department of Statistics.
- Related Field Requirement: A program must include 6 credits from outside the list of courses approved
for the major field, but within the Institute of Technology or the Department of Statistics.
- Minor Field Requirement: For a designated minor, 6 credits are required in a single field within
the Institute of Technology or the Department of Statistics.
- A designated minor in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science should focus on a particular subject outside
of Computer Engineering, such as digital signal processing, microelectronics, artificial intelligence,
or numerical analysis, for instance, and must be approved by the Directors of Graduate Study in both
Computer Engineering and the designated minor program.
- The breadth requirement must be satisfied (see the Degree Program Checklist).
- A maximum of 2 semester credits of seminar or special investigations may be included in a program.
- A maximum of 60% of coursework credit may be taken from a single department. (Courses that have equivalent
CS and EE designators may be counted using either designator for the purposes of satisfying this rule.)
- No credits from colloquia may be included in a program. Practical training does not count toward degree requirements.

C. WHAT THE DEPARTMENT AND THE GRADUATE SCHOOL MONITOR
- DEGREE PROGRAM FORM
File after completion of 10 semester credits
- THESIS REVIEWER'S REPORT FORM
This form is included in the graduation packet which may be requested via the web or in person at the Graduate School.
- FINAL EXAMINATION REPORT FORM
The report form must be returned to the Graduate School no later than the first workday following the examination.
- TWO UNBOUND COPIES OF THE THESIS, SIGNED BY THE ADVISOR
D. PLAN B PROJECT REQUIREMENTS (EE 8961, CSCI 8760)
The Plan B project is the vehicle by which the student demonstrates familiarity with the tools of research and scholarship
in his/her area, the ability to work in-dependently, and the skill to present the results of the investigation
effectively. The project(s) may be undertaken as an extension of the work required for an advanced course or seminar or
may be independent of any regular graduate course.
The Plan B candidate shall complete one to three projects (most students do only a single project), each resulting in a written report on a topic approved
by the advisor. The project(s) collectively are to represent at least an effort equivalent to 3 credits of coursework or
120 hours. Three copies of each report (one for each committee member) must be made available two weeks prior to
the final examination. The reports should be prepared in a professional manner, but no specific format, printing,
or binding requirements are imposed.
EE 8961/Csci 8760 may not be counted as part of the basic 15 semester credits required in the major field, but
may be counted to meet the overall 30 credit requirement.
- PLAN B PROJECT REGISTRATION REQUIREMENT (EE 8961, CSCI 8760)
Any student whose faculty advisor is in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department should register for
EE 8961. Any student whose faculty advisor is in the Computer Science and Engineering Department should register
for Csci 8760.
- PROJECT WORK MAY BE CARRIED OUT OFF-CAMPUS WITH APPROVAL OF THE GRADUATE COMMITTEE
Project work for the MS Comp E (Plan B) degree may be carried out off-campus without approval from
the Graduate Committee. The project must be supervised by the student's advisor.
- THE GRADUATION PACKET
The graduation packet may be requested via the web. The web site is
http://www.grad.umn.edu/gsss/degree%5Fcompletion/masters/index.html. Graduation
packets will be mailed to students in 3 working days. If there are questions or concerns about the request, the student
will be contacted in 3-4 working days.
