Art and Technology
Drawing from a brief history of contemporary artists working with the tools and content of science and technology, I will introduce the emerging focus of the Time and Interactivity Area within the Department of Art. This new media hybrid of electronics, computation and fabrication engages students in artistic investigations with tangible media.
In the process of presenting this overview, I will introduce
my current research project, Light
Sensitive, a new participatory
artwork that will engage people in contemplation as an interactive, social
experience within the urban environment. The focal phenomenon for contemplation
in “Light Sensitive” will be
bioluminescence. Characteristic of this genre of participatory installation
art, people will complete the artwork as they engage with a range of kinetic
and interactive technologies, to move the water that will then stimulate this
bioluminescent glow in a series of interactive vessels, fountains and pools.
