Welcome to the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities.
The department is one of the core engineering programs within the Institute of Technology (IT)—the University of
Minnesota's college of engineering, physical sciences, and mathematics. The combination of academic departments
and research centers housed within IT, combined with the resources of a large, comprehensive university, provides
unparalleled opportunities for cross-disciplinary research and education.

The career potential in electrical and computer engineering is excellent. Most ECE graduates find positions immediately
upon completion of their degree programs either in industry or academia. The Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area is a
thriving center of high technology, with numerous large and small high technology firms, specializing in electronics,
computers, telecommunications, magnetic storage, and biomedical devices. Students and faculty from the ECE department
have served as key sources of scientific and engineering talent, expertise, and innovative ideas for these and many other
companies. Electrical and Computer Engineering graduates have long been deeply involved in entrepreneurial activities.
Initially, all freshmen engineering and science students are admitted to our college, the Institute of Technology, (IT) giving
students time before officially being admitted to a major. However, before being officially admitted to a major, students can
designate an intended major allowing our department to communicate directly with all current and intended majors. Students
may designate an intended major or apply for admission to a major through IT Student Services. With the completion of 60
credits, each IT student is obliged to make formal application in 128 Lind Hall for admission to Upper Division. The
requirements are as follows:
• IT Technical GPA of 2.3
• Complete Math 2373, Phys 1302, EE 2001
• EE students must also complete EE 1301 and one of the following: EE 2011, EE 2301, or EE 2361.
• CompE students must also complete CSci 1901 and one of the following: EE 2011, EE 2301, EE 2361,
or CSci 1902.
Students in the Coordinate Campus IT program at UMD or UMM are considered for Upper Division admission to IT under
the same criteria as for IT students.
Students who apply for transfer from other institutions are generally considered under different criteria for admission when
applying directly to Upper Division. Consult IT’s transfer admission page for more information or contact ECE Undergraduate
