Kyle Dukart Receives John Tate Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising

Kyle Dukart, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Administrator and former Undergraduate Academic Advisor, has been awarded the University of Minnesota John Tate Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising.

The Tate award recognizes and rewards the contributions that advising makes in helping students formulate and achieve intellectual, career, and personal goals while highlighting the role that academic and career advising plays in the University’s educational mission.

“Kyle has been an exemplary academic advisor,” ECE Department Head David J. Lilja says. “He has demonstrated exceptional creativity ensuring a quality educational experience for ECE students. Most recently he was instrumental in establishing the ECE Exceed Lab for students who wanted a place to build extracurricular projects that include a significant electrical and computer engineering component."

"I am honored to receive the Tate award, as it reflects the deep commitment that Electrical and Computer Engineering and the College of Science and Engineering have to providing quality student education,” Dukart says. “I have been fortunate to work where I was encouraged to use my knowledge, creativity, and experience to transform the ECE undergraduate services area. The ECE team continues to strive for excellence and I hope to be a part of it for a long time."

In addition to creating enhanced student information sharing, contributing to students’ desire to work on extracurricular projects, and building databases that more accurately track student progress and scholarships, Dukart has participated in teaching an undergraduate class where CSE Freshmen learn time management skills, career and major exploration, and equity and diversity principles.
 

Dukart received his bachelor’s degree (a double major in English and honors graduating summa cum laude) in 1997 and his masters in English in 1999 both from the University of North Dakota. He also received a bachelor’s degree in computer science in 2002 from the University of North Dakota. Dukart expects to receive his Education Doctorate in 2015 from the University of Minnesota.

Serving as Academic Advisor since February 2007, Dukart also has held a joint position as an Information Technology Professional at the University of Minnesota, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering September 2009 to May 2013; Director of Student Services at the University of California, Berkeley, Department of Plant and Microbial Biology January 2003 to August 2007; and Associate Coordinator, University of North Dakota, Honors Program June 1999 to August 2002.

He also has served as a Lecturer of Online and Distance Education for the University of North Dakota September 2002 to October 2012; Teaching Faculty at Diablo Valley College, English Division September 2002 to December 2004; and Lecturer at the University of North Dakota, Honors program June 1999 to August 2002.

Dukart serves on two Boards: Academic Advising Network (AAN) at the University of Minnesota since August 2012 and the Union Park District council, a St. Paul governing advisory body as Chair of the Neighborhood Issues Committee since October 2009.

Dukart is the recipient of UC Berkeley’s College of National Resources Staff Recognition Award for 2006-2007 and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa Society, the nation’s oldest academic honor society (established in 1776.)
