Willem Van Roy, PhD

Dr. ir. Willem VAN ROY obtained the Electrical Engineering degree (1990) and the PhD degree (1995),
both from the K.U. Leuven (Belgium). From 1990 to 1995 he was affiliated with IMEC (Leuven, Belgium)
where he conducted research on the MBE growth of Mn-based epitaxial magnetic thin films and
heterostructures on III-V semiconductors. From 1995 to 1999 he was a postdoctoral researcher at the
Joint Research Center for Atom Technology (JRCAT) in Tsukuba, Japan, where he studied interlayer
coupling and magnetoresistance in epitaxial trilayer structures with semiconducting, ferrimagnetic,
and antiferromagnetic spacer layers. In 1999 he returned to IMEC as a Postdoctoral Fellow of the
Fund for Scientific Research - Flanders (Belgium) and a senior research scientist, focussing on
half-metallic ferromagnets, spin injection and detection in semiconductors, and magnetic
semiconductors. Since 2004 he is a staff member of IMEC, where he is currently responsible for
the spintronic and nanomagnetism activities in the FNS group.
